These days, it seems as though everything has its own holiday or designated day or week of recognition. Well, it is easy to say that our firm’s favorite celebration is National Estate Planning Awareness Week, which kicks off this week. Without further ado, please continue reading to learn what you should know about National Estate Planning Awareness Week and how one of the experienced Butler County estate planning & probate attorneys at Heritage Elder Law & Estate Planning, LLC can help you celebrate it appropriately.

What should I know about National Estate Planning Awareness Week?

As the name suggests, the essential purpose of National Estate Planning Awareness Week is to educate the general population on the importance of having an estate plan. Further, it emphasizes that its importance stems from protecting your assets and your loved ones upon your unfortunate passing. Sadly, it is the law of life that nobody can escape death. So this is why every individual must have an estate plan in place.

Of note, an estate plan should be on your radar regardless of how many assets you leave behind or how many loved ones you have to inherit these assets. In other words, estates big and small all deserve comprehensive plans. This is something our firm believes in strongly.

What should I do to recognize National Estate Planning Awareness Week?

Now that you better understand why National Estate Planning Awareness Week exists, you should figure out a way to recognize it suitably. Well, how you celebrate this week may depend on what stage of the estate planning process you are currently at. For example, if you have not even started working on your estate plan yet, it may be in your best interest to draft a Last Will and Testament.

Namely, a Last Will and Testament is arguable the best stepping stone toward building up your entire estate plan. This is because it may simply allow you to list your assets and state which of your loved ones should inherit them upon your unfortunate passing. In addition to naming your desired beneficiaries, this estate planning document may allow you to name your appointed executor. You may instruct this individual on how to manage and distribute your assets accordingly, when the right time comes.

On the other hand, if you have already established a Last Will and Testament and other basic estate planning documents, you may use this week to circle back to them. This is because you may have accumulated new assets, given away old assets, or welcomed new loved ones in your life who you wish to serve as your beneficiaries. In any of these circumstances, you may have to update these documents to better align with your current life status.

If you still have doubts about how to proceed, please consult one of the skilled Butler County estate planning & probate attorneys. Our team at Heritage Elder Law & Estate Planning, LLC will point you in the right direction.
